Softball Drops Doubleheader To Albany

ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine softball team was defeated in both games of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Kessock Field. On a cold and cloudy day, Albany scored four runs in the seventh inning to take the first game 7-0. In the second game, Maine took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but Albany had two runs in the fifth inning to win 3-1. Maine is 12-20 overall on the season and 6-4 in America East action, while Albany improves to 25-9 overall and 11-1 in America East.

The first game was scoreless going into the top of the fifth inning. For Albany, Julie Gannon drew a walk and Brittany Burnham was brought in to pinch run. A single by Ali Meacham advanced Burnham to third base. On a pop fly by Leslie Busch, Burnham tried to score, but was out at the plate in a collision with catcher Lindsay Tibbetts (Berwick, Maine). Tibbetts would leave the game after the play due to injury. Danielle Buyea, who was pinch running for Meacham, scored the first run of the game on a fly ball to centerfield by Maegan Larsen.

In the top of the sixth inning, Ashley Rios hit a solo homerun over the left field fence. Katrina Dunning had a triple, and was able to score on a RBI groundout by Erika Enocksen. The Great Danes continued the offensive showing in the seventh as Leslie Busch reached first base on a passed ball and Larsen had a single and advanced to second on a Maine throwing error. Amber Maisonet hit a triple to score both Busch and Larsen, while Kelly Ogden added a triple to score Maisonet. Rios hit a fly ball to drive in Ogden, which gave the Great Danes a 7-0 lead. For the Great Danes, Amanda Morin had the win with seven strikeouts and one hit allowed, while Sarah Bennis (Pownal, Maine) had the loss for Maine with seven strikeouts.

In the second game, the Black Bears got off to a good start as Brittany Cheney (Abington, Mass.) singled to left field. Amy Kuhl (Phoenix, Ariz.) drew a walk, which advanced Cheney to second base. Molly McKinney (Byron Center, Mich.) singled to left field, which scored Cheney as Maine took a 1-0 lead. In the top of the fourth inning, Albany tied the game with a solo home run by Kelly Ogden. After Maine left one runner on base in the bottom of the fourth, the Great Danes added two runs in the fifth inning. Busch singled and drove in Buyea, while Gannon scored on a Maine fielding error. The Black Bears left one runner on base in the top of the fifth and two on base in the bottom of the sixth, but could not drive in a run and were defeated 3-1. For Albany, Casey Halloran won her 13th straight game with three strikeouts and five hits allowed, while Jenna Merchant (Sandy, Utah) had three strikeouts and four hits in the loss for Maine.
