Softball Drops 5-0 Decision to Boston University on Tuesday

April 24, 2007

Box Score

ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine softball team had its three-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday with a 5-0 defeat to Boston University at Mike Kessock Field in Orono. The game marked the 2007 home opener for the Black Bears. Maine fell to 21-23 and 6-8 in America East. The Terriers improved to 28-9 and 12-2 in the league.

The Black Bears had a golden opportunity to strike first in the contest, as they loaded the bases with only one out in the second inning. However, BU pitcher Megan Currier induced a flyout by Beth Foltz and a lineout by Melinda Corssino to put down the threat.

The Terriers responded in the bottom of the second by pushing three runs across to take a 3-0 lead, and then added to their lead with a pair of runs in the third frame.

Trailing 5-0 in the fourth, Maine tried to mount another rally as it put runners on first and second with one out. Kristen Calvetti singled to get the inning going and was pulled in favor of pinch runner Alexis Pullen, who advanced to second when Kate Joseph followed with a base on balls. Again, Currier got out of the jam by striking out Foltz and fielding a comebacker from Corssino.

Maine freshman pitcher Jessica Ghazali, who was named the league's co-pitcher of the week on Monday, was tagged with the loss to fall to 8-3 on the season. She went five innings and allowed five runs -- three earned -- on seven hits with a strikeout and two walks. Classmate Christine McGivney came on in relief of Ghazali in the sixth and did not give up a hit.

The Black Bears return to action this weekend when they play host to Albany in a three-game series at Kessock Field. The series will begin on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. The set will conclude on Sunday with a single game, also beginning at 12 p.m. Sunday's contest will be Senior Day, as each Black Bear senior will be honored before the first pitch.
