Softball Swept in Doubleheader by Albany

April 28, 2007

Box Score

ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine softball team dropped its doubleheader with Albany on Saturday at Mike Kessock Field in Orono. The Black Bears fell 5-0 in the first game, and then almost pulled off a come-from-behind win in the second game before falling 4-3. Maine fell to 21-25 and 6-10 in America East. Albany improved to 26-13 and 9-7 in the league.

The Black Bears trailed 4-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh in game two, but started a comeback. Freshman Alexis Souhlaris led off the inning with a single and followed by stealing second and then advancing to third on a throwing error by the Albany catcher. Ashley Waters followed and blasted a pitch to the wall in right field, which drove in Souhlaris to cut the deficit to 4-1. The Black Bears' back-to-back hits chased Albany starting pitcher Leah McIntosh, who had entered the inning with a no-hitter intact.

Casey Halloran, who won the first game of the day for Albany, came on in relief and promptly got Kristie Hawkins to foul out to the catcher for the inning's first out. Kristen Calvetti followed and brought Maine within a run at 4-3 when she drilled a fastball over the wall in left field, bringing home Waters as well. However, Kate Joseph and Erin Iandoli struck out swinging to end the rally.

Maine freshman starting pitcher Christine McGivney suffered the loss despite going the distance, yielding four runs -- only one earned -- and striking out three. McIntosh got the win for Albany.

Halloran earned the win in the first game for Albany as she went seven innings scattering three hits over that span and striking out 10. Tara Vilardo had two of Maine's three hits in the opener.

Maine and Albany will conclude their three-game series on Sunday with a 12 p.m. tilt at Mike Kessock Field. Prior to the contest, the Black Bears will honor their six seniors and then honor Mr. Alan and Jane Joseph for the leadership in the effort to renovate Kessock Field during the off-season.
