![]() Softball Splits Doubleheader At UMBC

BALTIMORE, Md. - The University of Maine softball team split a doubleheader at UMBC on Friday afternoon in America East conference action. In the first game, the Black Bears lost 6-3, but bounced back with a 6-2 win in the second game. In the second game, Maine had four runs in the first inning, including a three-run homerun by Erin Provost. Maine is 14-23 overall on the season and currently sit at fourth place with a 8-7 record in America East action. In the first game, Maine took an early lead as Amy Kuhl (Phoenix, Ariz.) doubled to right center which drove in Jess Brady (Jackman, Maine) and Lauren Dulkis (Peabody, Mass.), both of whom had reached on singles. For UMBC in the first, Dana Shepherd had an RBI double. The Black Bears added to their lead with a solo homerun by Brittany Cheney (Abington, Mass.) in the third inning. UMBC took over the lead in the bottom of the third inning as Jessica Griffith led off the inning with a walk. Kali Shirk and Amanda McGhee recorded singles loading the bases for Dana Shepherd with no outs. Shepherd singled in Griffith and Shirk to tie the game 3-3. Kristie Pickeral doubled down the left field line, bringing in McGhee and Shepherd to put UMBC up for good. The Retrievers added a run in the fifth inning for the 6-3 final score. On the mound for UMBC, Amy Sadowl struck out five in the game and allowed three runs on 10 hits. For Maine, Candace Jaegge went the complete game, allowing fix runs on seven hits with two strikeouts. In game two, Maine once again took an early lead as Kuhl doubled down the leftfield line to score Dulkis. Molly McKinney (Byron Center, Mich.) reached first on an error, which was followed by a homerun by Dulkis over the centerfield wall to take a 4-0 lead. In the second inning, Dulkis doubled to right center, scoring Dana Grimm (Coopersville, Mich.), while a sacrifice fly by Dulkis in the fourth inning scored Sarah Bennis (Pownal, Maine). Bennis controlled the mound, holding UMBC to two runs of four hits with eight strikeouts. UMBC only had two hits going into the bottom of the sixth when the Retrievers scored two runs as Reilly Ward doubled off the left centerfield wall, bringing in Kali Shirk and Dana Shepherd. Bennis had eight strikeouts in the win while Jessica Taylor took the loss. Taylor lasted only one inning, allowing five runs on five hits with only one of those runs earned. Katie Jo Passerro pitched six innings of relief, allowing one unearned run on two hits and striking out four.
Next up for the Black Bears will be a single game at UMBC on Saturday, April 30, wrapping up five games in three days.
