Softball Takes 7-6 Win At UMBC

BALTIMORE, Md. - The University of Maine softball team took nine innings to defeat UMBC on Sunday afternoon 7-6 in America East conference action. UMBC scored three in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extra innings, but Jess Brady scored on a single by Amy Kuhl in the top of the ninth for the game-winner. Maine is 15-23 overall on the season and currently sit tied for third place with a 9-7 record in America East.

The Black Bears took an early 1-0 lead when Jess Brady (Jackman, Maine) hit a solo homerun in the first inning. However, UMBC would counter in the bottom frame, as Reilly Ward hit the first of her two homeruns on the day, to give the Retrievers a 2-0 advantage. Maine reclaimed the lead in the fourth, scoring two on a two-run blast by Dana Grimm (Coopersville, Mich.). The Black Bears extended their lead to 6-2 in the fifth, on a two-run double by Erin Provost (Peru, N.Y) and a run-scoring single by pitcher Sarah Bennis (Pownal, Maine).

UMBC pulled to within three in the sixth after Ward's second homerun of the day, and rallied in the seventh as they scored three runs on three hits to tie the game at 6-6. Dana Shepherd, Pickeral, and Ashlea Underwood each batted in a run in that inning. The game remained tied at six until the ninth inning, when Brady led off with a single and then stole second base. Brittany Cheney (Abington, Mass.) advanced Brady to third on a sacrifice bunt, then Amy Kuhl (Phoenix, Ariz.) hit a single to score Brady. In the bottom of the ninth Shepherd flied out to centerfield, then Bennis posted two strikeouts to win the game.

 

 

For the game, Brady had two three hits on five at bats with one RBI. Kuhl was 3-for-5, with one run scored. Lauren Dulkis (Peabody, Mass.) and Cheney each had two hits. On the mound for Maine, Sarah Bennis pitched the complete game giving up six runs on seven hits with eleven strikeouts. For UMBC, Sadowl went the first six innings, giving up six runs on eleven hits with three strikeouts. Taylor had the loss, giving up one run on two hits in three innings of work.
