May 6, 2007

Box Score

VESTAL, N.Y. - The University of Maine softball team closed out the 2007 season on Sunday with a tough 5-4 loss to Binghamton at East Gym Field in Vestal, N.Y. The Black Bears concluded the season with a 24-26 record and a 9-11 mark in America East play. The Bearcats improved to 8-33 and 3-17 in the conference.

Playing in her final collegiate game, senior Tara Vilardo was one of two Black Bears to record a pair of hits on the day. She joined freshman Alexis Souhlaris with two hits apiece and a pair of runs scored apiece. Fellow senior Kristie Hawkins led the Black Bears with a pair of runs batted in during her final collegiate contest.

After falling behind 1-0 in the second inning, Maine scored twice in the third inning on a two-run double by Hawkins, bringing home Vilardo and Souhlaris. Vilardo led off the frame with a single, advanced to second on a stolen base and then moved up to third on a base hit by Souhlaris.

The Bearcats responded with three runs in the fourth to take back the lead for good at 4-2. They tacked on a run in the fifth to hold a 5-2 lead.

Maine tried to mount a rally in the top of the seventh as it pushed two runs across to pull within a run. Souhlaris drove in Vilardo with a single for the inning's first run, while Ashley Waters drove in the frame's other tally with an RBI sacrifice fly. However, Hawkins popped out to second base to end the threat.

Freshman pitcher Jessica Ghazali got the start for Maine and suffered the loss as she went 3.2 innings, yielding four runs on six hits. It marked the first time all weekend a Maine pitcher allowed an earned run in the series.
