Softball Falls 1-0 to Boston University

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The University of Maine softball team went nine innings with Boston University before the Terriers scored on an error to take a 1-0 win. Maine's Sarah Bennis had ten strikeouts in the game, while Brittany Cheney had two of the Black Bears five hits. Maine is 16-25 overall on the season and are the Tournament's third seed with a 10-8 record in America East. The Black Bears will face Stony Brook on Friday at 1:30. The Terriers had the first hit of the game in the bottom of the first inning on a single by Jamie Haas, but she was caught stealing. In the second inning, Kristie Hawkins (Portland, Maine) had the first hit for the Black Bears. Brittany Cheney (Abington, Mass.) led off the top of the fourth with a double, but the Black Bears could not bring her in. Jennifer Shields singled for Boston University in the bottom of the fifth and Cheney reached first on a bunt in the sixth for Maine, but neither team could get the runners home. In the bottom of the sixth, the Christy King led off with a bunt single. Tyler Benson grounded out, but advanced pinch runner Molly Gallagher to second base. Jamie Haas singled, but Gallagher was out at home to prevent a run. In the top of the eighth, Tara Vilardo (Ticonderoga, N.Y.) drew a walk and advanced to second on a single by Jess Brady (Jackman, Maine), but Maine left both runners on base. Maine's Lindsay Tibbetts (Berwick, Maine) had a single in the top of the ninth, but the game remained scoreless. In the bottom of the ninth inning, Tyler Benson led off with a double. Jamie Hass then singled. Both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch. Brandi Shields reached first on a fielders choice, with Benson out at home. Chiya Louie then reached first on a fielding error by the Black Bears, which scored Haas to win the game.
Sarah Bennis (Pownal, Maine) was on the mound for the Black Bears and had ten strikeouts while allowing only six hits and no walks in the loss. Ashlee Freeman pitched for the Terriers, striking out nine batters and allowing only five hits and two walks. Maine will face fourth-seed Stony Brook on Friday. In Thursday's game, Stony Brook was defeated by first-seed Albany 4-3 on a walk-off homerun in the seventh inning by the Great Danes. Maine has reached the postseason for the fourth straight season.
