STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The University of Maine softball team took part in another extra-innings game in the America East Tournament as they were defeated 3-0 by Stony Brook on Friday afternoon in thirteen innings. Maine's Sarah Bennis had fourteen strikeouts in the game, while Jess Brady had two of the Black Bears five hits. The Black Bears end the season 16-26 overall and with a 10-8 record in America East. Maine had a hit by Jess Brady (Jackman, Maine) in the first inning and a single by Molly McKinney (Byron Center, Mich.) in the second inning. Sarah Bennis (Pownal, Main) added a hit in the third inning. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Stony Brook had their first hit of the game on a single by Ashley Westphal. In the top of the eighth inning, the Black Bears left two runners on base. The Seawolves had two hits and left two on base in the bottom of the tenth inning. As the game continued, Brittany Cheney (Abington, Mass.) singled in the top of the eleventh, followed by an error allowing Lindsay Tibbetts (Berwick, Maine) to reach first and advanced Cheney to third. McKinney reached first base on a fielder's choice which resulted in Cheney being called out at home. Brady had her second hit of the game in the twelfth inning, and then stole her third base of the game to advance to second, but was left on base at the end of the inning.
Following a three-up, three-down top of the thirteenth for Maine, Stony Brook led off with a walk. Jane Stein then safely reached first on a bunt. On a sacrifice bunt by Ashley Westphal, the runners advanced. Kristen Burst then capped the game with a homerun shot to left center field for a 3-0 win for the Seawolves. On the mound for Maine, Sarah Bennis (Pownal, Maine) pitched for the second straight game and posted fourteen strikeouts with only five hits, three runs and two walks for the 13 innings. For the Seawolves, Angela Andrews went the complete game and gave up five hits and two walks with seven strikeouts. The Black Bears had two players named to the All-Tournament team: Jess Brady and Sarah Bennis. Maine has reached the postseason for four straight seasons. The 13 innings was the second longest game in America East Tournament history, behind a 20 inning game between Hofstra and Delaware in 2001.
