Waters, Hall Garner America East Weekly Awards

April 7, 2008

ORONO, Maine - University of Maine softball players, Ashley Waters and Terren Hall, were named the America East Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, on Monday as announced by the league. It marks the second time this season Waters has garnered the player-of-the-week award, while Hall takes home the rookie award for the second time in as many weeks. The players' awards were made possible after Maine swept a three-game series at Binghamton this weekend, thus running their win streak to four games.

Waters batted .700 this weekend (7-for-10), including blasting a home run in Sunday's 7-1 win over the Bearcats. She is tied with Hall for the team lead in homers with six. During the three games against Binghamton, Waters posted a 1.300 slugging percentage (three extra base hits) and a .727 on-base percentage. She drove in four runs during the weekend while also blasting a triple in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader. With her second weekly award, Waters is tied with Boston University's Melissa Dubay for the most player-of-the-week awards handed out by the league this year.

Hall batted .625 in the weekend series, including blasting a home run on Sunday. She had five hits, including a pair of doubles, drove in five runs and scored five times. She was also 1-for-1 in stolen base attempts during the weekend. In addition to being tied for the team high in home runs, Hall leads the 2008 Black Bears in runs batted in with 20. Hall's two weekly rookie awards is the most in America East this season. She is also the only player in the conference this season to win one of the three weekly awards (either player, pitcher, rookie) in consecutive weeks.

The Black Bears out-scored Binghamton, 27-4, in the three games this weekend. Maine is 8-2 in its last 10 America East games dating back to last season, and has scored at least seven runs in seven of those victories. Maine has pounded out 24 home runs already this season after hitting just 19 all of last year.

Maine, which currently is tied with Boston University atop the America East standings with identical 5-1 league records, heads into an important week of competition over the next several days. The Black Bears will travel to Boston to face the Terriers in a doubleheader on Wednesday at 3 p.m., then travel to face third-place Albany in a three-game series this Saturday (DH - 1 p.m.) and Sunday (12 p.m.).
