Jessica Ghazali Named America East Co-Pitcher of the Week

April 23, 2007

ORONO, Maine - University of Maine freshman softball pitcher Jessica Ghazali was named the America East Co-Pitcher of the Week on Monday after her spectacular performance this past weekend in a three-game sweep over Vermont. It marked the second pitcher-of-the-week award for the rookie hurler this season and the first since March 12 after she turned in a strong showing during Maine's two-week spring break trip through Florida.

Ghazali appeared in all three games for the Black Bears over the weekend and went 2-0 with a 1.05 ERA. She worked 13.1 innings and scattered a pair of earned runs and 10 hits over that span. Ghazali pitched a complete game in Sunday's 3-2 victory over the Catamounts, which ran Maine's win streak to three games and four victories in its last five contests.

Ghazali is now 8-2 on the season, as her eight victories are tops on the team. She has also owns the lowest ERA on the team at 3.20.

The Black Bears are currently 21-22 on the season and 6-7 in America East, which is good for a tie for fifth place in the league with defending champion Albany. Both teams sit two games out of the final playoff spot for the conference tournament with two more weeks remaining in the regular season.

Maine returns to action Tuesday when it plays host to first-place Boston University at 2:30 p.m., at Mike Kessock Field. The game marks the 2007 home opener for the Black Bears. Admission is FREE for all home Black Bear softball games played at Kessock Field.
