Time Change for Saturday's Softball Doubleheader

April 25, 2006

ORONO, Maine - Saturday's softball doubleheader start time between Maine and Binghamton at Kessock Field has been moved to 2 p.m. The second game of the doubleheader will begin approximately 20 minutes after the conclusion of the first contest. Saturday will also be Strike Out For Cancer Day. Admission to all home softball games is free and fans attending Saturday's doubleheader are encouraged to wear pink clothing to symbolize the fight against cancer. Each Black Bear softball player will be wearing a pink ribbon to honor the event.

Representatives from the local American Cancer Society will be on hand to talk to fans about the organization and what its doing in the battle against cancer. Fans can also make a monetary donation to the American Cancer Society or make a pledge per strikeout thrown by Maine pitchers.

The Friends of Maine Softball will also be on hand to sell raffle tickets for gift baskets, which will be given away during the game.

Strike Out For Cancer Day is being sponsored by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA), and the event will be going on at other colleges throughout the nation this weekend.

Saturday's doubleheader against the Bearcats could prove to be significant in Maine softball history. This year's Black Bear squad sits just two wins shy for the most victories in a single season in program history. The 1994 softball team produced a 32-17 record and advanced to the NCAA Regionals. The 30 wins by Maine this year marks just the second team in program history to top the 30-win mark in a season. The Black Bears (30-15, 11-3 America East) sit atop the conference standings and are 1.5 games ahead of Albany in the race for the regular season championship and the right to host the league tournament on May 11-13.
