Ashley Waters Named America East Rookie of the Week
May 8, 2006 ORONO, Maine - Freshman second baseman Ashley Waters (Amesbury, Mass.) was named the America East Rookie of the Week on Monday for her performance during last weekend's series victory over UMBC. It marks the fourth weekly conference award and the first rookie honor for Maine this season. Waters batted .444 (4-for-9) this past weekend as the Black Bears took 2-of-3 from the Retrievers. She delivered the game-winning RBI single in the eighth inning of the first game of Friday's doubleheader to life Maine to a 2-1 victory. Waters then had a hit, scored a run and turned in several impressive defensive plays in the second game of the doubleheader, as the Black Bears pulled out a 5-0 victory and clinched the 2006 America East regular season championship. She blasted a double and triple during the weekend while also posting a team-high .778 slugging percentage. Waters batted .261 during the regular season, but increased her average during conference play to a .294 mark. She ranks third on the team in runs scored with 20, and has smacked one home run and driven in six runs. She joins pitchers Sarah Bennis (Pownal, Maine) and Jenna Balent (Conifer, Colo.) as weekly conference award winners this season. Bennis was named the pitcher of the week twice (March 13 and April 10), while Balent garnered the league's pitching award on April 3. Maine begins post-season play on Thursday when it plays host to the 2006 America East Tournament at Kessock Field. The championship will run Thursday to Saturday with the winner earning the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Championship. The top-seeded Black Bears will take on No. 4-seed Boston University at 2:30 p.m. Maine took 2-of-3 from the Terriers during the regular season, including a 6-4 come-from-behind win in Orono back on April 26.
