Alexis Souhlaris Named to All-America East First-Team in Softball

May 9, 2007

BOSTON, Mass. - The America East named its yearly award winners and all-conference teams on Wednesday night at its annual softball award's banquet, and University of Maine freshman outfielder Alexis Souhlaris was named to the All-America East First-Team for her efforts. She was also named to the All-Rookie Team as well.

Souhlaris was joined on the All-Rookie Team by classmate and utility player Whitney Spangler, who was also named to the All-America East Second-Team along with senior first baseman Kristie Hawkins.

Souhlaris led Maine with a .362 batting average this past season and was second on the squad with 54 hits. Her average ranked third in the league and her total hits ranked fourth. She led America East with 30 stolen bases, which also set a single-season school record at Maine. She becomes the 16th player in program history to earn First-Team All-America East honors, and its the sixth-straight year Maine has had at least one player named to the first-team.

Spangler, who ranked second in America East with three triples in 2007, batted .308 with two home runs and 18 runs batted in. Her batting average ranked third on the team and she was also 8-for-10 in stolen base opportunities.

Hawkins posted a career-best .296 batting average this past season, while starting all 50 games. She finished second on the team in RBIs with 24, while also blasting one home run. It marked the first conference honor of her career. Also of note was sophomore second baseman Ashley Waters being named to the America East All-Academic Team.

The Black Bears finished the 2007 season with a 24-26 record and a 9-11 mark in America East play, as they just missed qualifying for the conference tournament for the sixth-consecutive season. Maine will return 14 of 20 players for next season.
