Ashley Waters Named 2008 America East Softball Scholar-Athlete of the Year
July 22, 2008
ORONO, Maine - University of Maine softball standout Ashley Waters (Amesbury, Mass.) was named the 2008 America East Softball Scholar-Athlete of the Year on Tuesday. It marked the second major awarded given to Waters by the conference this year, as she was also named the league's player of the year in the sport back in May. Waters turned in one of the finest offensive seasons in school and America East history in 2008. She either tied for the lead or led the conference in hits (58), home runs (10) and total bases (101) following the regular season. Waters also ranked among the top 10 in several other offensive categories following the regular season, including: batting average (T-5th, .352), slugging percentage (3rd, .612), runs scored (5th, 33), runs batted in (5th, 30), doubles (5th, 11), total plate appearances (10th, 182) and at-bats (3rd, 165). Waters' offensive play was one of the major reasons that enabled the Black Bears to shake off a slow start to the season and contend for a playoff spot in the campaign's final weekend. In conference play this season, Waters batted .400 against league foes. She was named to the NFCA Northeast All-Region Second-Team for her efforts, thus becoming just the fifth player in program history to earn the honor. Waters was also an America East All-Academic team selection and earned All-District accolades from ESPN the Magazine and CoSIDA. A member of the America East Commissioner's Honor Roll, Waters is pursuing a degree in communications.
A committee of athletic administrators and NCAA Faculty Athletics Representatives chose Waters, as the panel selected a student-athlete honoree in each of the nine spring championship sports in the league. Each America East Scholar-Athlete was a starter or prominent reserve and carries a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.20. All 20 Scholar-Athletes from the 2007-08 year are eligible for the 2008 America East Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, which will be announced on Thursday, August 14. One male winner and one female winner will be chosen by the same committee that selected the individual sports scholar-athletes.
