Swimming and Diving Splits Meet at Providence

Final Stats

Providence, R. I. - The University of Maine swimming and diving teams split a dual meet against the Providence College Friars Saturday afternoon. The women's team won 207-88, while the men were edged 154-140.

The women were lead by Courtney Healey, who again swept the 100 (1:08.72) and 200 (2:29.03) meter backstroke events. Colleen Miller turned in two first place finishes, as did Adi Levy and Megan McLean. Miller won the 800 m freestyle (9:18.20) and the 100 m freestyle (1:01.02). Levy took first in the 200 meter butterfly in 2:28.28 and she won the 400 meter freestyle in 4:40.41. McLean finished the 100 meter breaststroke in 1:17.55 and the 200 meter IM in 2:33.27. In the 200 meter IM, Mackenzie Grobmyer was edged by McLean, and Grobmyer finished in 2:33.75. Grobmyer also finished second in the 200 meter fly in 2:30.33 and the 100 fly (1:09.47). Meag Fisher won the 100 meter fly in 1:09.16. The women swept the top three spots in the 200 meter breaststroke, lead by Lily Herbold (2:48.54) who was followed by Caitlin Shelley (2:52.26) and Erin Little (2:56.46). Erica Simpson placed second in both the 100 and 200 backstroke events, finished the 100 in 1:12.99 and the 200 in 2:35.22.

For the men Jeremy Bender won three events and Cully Wakelin added two victories. Bender won the 800 meter freestyle (9:01.56) and the 400 meter freestyle (4:21.85). Later in the meet he also won the 200 meter IM in a time of 2:17.11. Wakelin won the 100 and 200 meter freestyle events, taking the 100 in 54.68 and the 200 in 2:02.00. Dustin Carrier and Tyler Isherwood finished second and third in the 100 meter breaststroke, Carrier finishing in 1:15.14 and Isherwood in 1:16.46. Carrier also finished second in the 200 meter breaststroke, touching the wall at 2:42.45. John Quinn won the 50 meter freestyle in 25.80 and placed third in the 200 free (2:04.13). In the 100 back Kevin Staples took second place in 1:06.71 and in the 200 butterfly Brian Smith came in second place after posting a 2:33.98.

 

 

The women's diving team was lead by Laura Williamson who placed second in the 1 meter dive, scoring 147.68. The men's diving team did not compete against Providence.

The men and women return to competition against the Eagles of Boston College this Friday and Saturday. On Friday January 25, the night meet will commence at 6:00 p.m. and on Saturday January 26 the meet will begin at 11:00 a.m.
