Swimming Finishes America East Championships

BOSTON, Mass. - The University of Maine men's and women's swimming and diving teams completed the final day of the America East Championships on Sunday night at Boston University. The women finished fourth overall, while the men were fifth in the meet. The Black Bears broke nine school records at the championships and had numerous strong performances. In the opening event on Sunday, the Black Bears placed three swimmers in the women's 1650 free. Colleen Miller (Missoula, Montana) was third overall with a time of 17:24.85. Her time destroyed the school record in the event, which was previously 17:41.20 set in 2004 by Brittany Harrington. Miller also set the school record in the 1000, as her split in the 1650 was 10:26.87, breaking the record set by Brittany Harrington in 2005 of 10:35.26. Also in the 1650 free, Mimi Chovanec (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) was ninth in 17:52.52 and Sarah Holmsten (Red Wing, Minn.) was 15th in 18:10.36. In the 200 back, five Black Bears scored points, led by Tal Shpaizer (Shoham, Israel) in third at 2:05.60. Megan Wolters (Cleveland, Miss.) was fourth in 2:06.24, Courtney Healey (Reading, Mass.) was eleventh in 2:10.93, Erica Simpson (Bangor, Maine) was 13th in 2:14.44 and Mimi Chovanec was 16th in 2:18.94. Jessie Ellis-Alcaide (Harpswell, Maine) broke her second school record of the meet with a time of 52.06 in the 100 free with a third place finish. She broke the record of 52.23 set in 2001. Kari Boffa (Falmouth, Maine) was 12th in 53.90 and Heather Griffin (Presque Isle, Maine) was 14th in 54.20 in the 100 free as well.
In the women's 200 breast, Meaghann Fisher (Carmel, Ind.) was seventh with a time of 2:30.60, while Megan McLean (Walpole, Mass.) was eleventh in 2:31.95 and Candace Coville (Titusville, N.J.) was 12th in 2:32.68. In the 200 butterfly, Adi Levy (Givatayim, Israel) was sixth in 2:09.07, while Mackenzie Grobmyer (Charlottesville, Va.) was tenth in 2:10.35. Shannon Scott (Cumberland, Maine) was eighth in the one meter diving event with 194.60 points. The Black Bears 400 free relay was fifth. For the men, four Black Bears scored in the 1650. Brendan Amy (South Portland, Maine) was ninth in 17:19.33, Brock Libby (Skowhegan, Maine) was tenth in 17:38.16, Jamison Young (Richboro, Pa.) was eleventh in 17:38.27 and Sean Hess (Colorado Springs, Colo.) was 14th in 18:10.87. In the 200 back, Tyler Isherwood (Holden, Maine) was tenth in 1:59.15, Jamison Young was 13th in 2:03.10, Kevin Staples (Mt. Desert, Maine) was 15th and Brendan Amy was 16th in 2:09.18. Cully Wakelin (Biddeford, Maine) was ninth in the 100 free in 47.17. The men's 200 breast was a record-setter for the Black Bears. In the preliminaries, Chris Card (West Bath, Maine) set a school record with a time of 2:06.66, breaking the mark set by Dewey Wyatt in 1987. His record was then broken in the preliminaries by Nathan Richard (Vergennes, Vt.) with a time of 2:06.46. In the finals, Nathan Richard again broke the record with a time of 2:05.67 in his third place finish. Chris Card was fourth overall in 2:08.00. In the 200 butterfly, Brian Smith (Scarborough, Maine) was 14th in 2:11.09 and Brock Libby was 15th in 2:12.91. Maine's 400 free relay was fifth overall. On the men's side, UMBC (876.5 points) was trailed by the runners-up of Binghamton with 805 points, while third place went to Stony Brook (506.5 ). Boston University (448) and Maine (393) rounded out the five-team field. The UMBC women (719) won by over a hundred points. Runner-up went to Boston University (616), while New Hampshire (596) finished in a close third, just 20 points back. Maine (462) ended in fourth, followed by Vermont (454), Stony Brook (264) and Binghamton (247). It marked the third straight season that the Black Bears finished fourth in the championship.
