Orono, Maine - The University of Maine women's swimming team split their opening meet with a 184-109 win over Central Connecticut and a narrow 152-141 loss to Northeastern. The Black Bears stand at 1-1 to start the season.

Samantha Graham (Vestal, N.Y.) led the divers with a first place finish in the one meter, scoring 237.30 points, only 18.85 short of Maine's all-time record. Graham also placed third in the three meter dive, scoring 207.20. Erica Haas (Concord, Mass.) finished fifth in the one meter with 193.55 and fourth in the three meter with 184.20.

Colleen Miller (Missoula, Mont.) picked up where she left off last season as she led the Black Bears with wins in both the 500 and 200 freestyle. Miller recorded times of 5:07.32 in the 500 and 1:55.74 in the 200. Mimi Chovanec (St. Augustine, Fla.) provided an early spark when she scored a first place finish in the second event, the 1000 freestyle, in 10:42.13. Alicia Hahn (Falmouth, Maine) nabbed a win in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:12.33, while Caitlin Shelley (Charlottesville, Va.) made her way to the winners circle when she finished the 200 IM in 2:13.95.

The women will join the men for their first meet as Maine travels to Kingston to take on Rhode Island and visiting Bryant on Sunday, November 2, at 11 am.
