Swimming & Diving Split Meet Against Rhode Island

ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine men's and women's swimming & diving teams opened their 2007-08 seasons on Saturday by splitting a dual-meet versus Rhode Island at Wallace Pool in Orono. The women's team knocked off URI 184-116, while the men fell to the Rams 185-114.

Individual Black Bear winners on the women's side, included: two-time winner Mimi Chovanec (1000-yard freestyle, 10:30.95; 200-yard backstroke, 2:11.31), three-time winner Colleen Miller (200-yard freestyle, 1:56.99; 50-yard freestyle, 25.19; 500-yard freestyle, 5:15.74), Caitlin Shelley (100-yard breaststroke, 1:08.52), Kari Boffa (100-yard freestyle, 55.17), Kerstin Fenton (200-yard butterfly, 2:29.91), Meag Fisher (100-yard butterfly, 1:00.19), and Samantha Graham (three-meter diving, 218.78 points).

Individual Black Bear winners on the men's side, included: two-time winner Jeremy Bender (1000-yard freestyle, 10:07.51; 500-yard freestyle, 4:55.60), two-time winner Cully Wakelin (100-yard breaststroke, 1:01.50; 100-yard freestyle, 48.22), and Keith Burgie (three-meter diving, 279.38 points).

Both teams will return to action Nov. 10, when they travel to face Stony Brook in a dual-meet beginning at 11 a.m., in Stony Brook, N.Y.
