Swimming Splits Meet With Rhode Island

ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine men's and women's swim teams began the season on Saturday at Wallace Pool against Rhode Island. The women won 177 to 123, while the men were defeated 146 to 153. Tal Shpaizer, Shelbi Settlage, Colleen Miller, and Adi Levy won two events each for the women, while Nathan Richard and Keith Burgie won two events each for the men.

The women started strong by winning the 200 medley relay. Freshman Colleen Miller (Missoula, Mont.) won the 200 free with a time of 1:56.58. In the 100 back, Maine swept the top three spots, led by Tal Shpaizer (Shoham, Israel) in 1:00.90. Shelbi Settlage (Bothell, Wash.) won the 100 breast with a time of 1:09.26. Adi Levy (Givatayim, Israel) won the 200 butterfly in 2:10.64, while Shannon Scott (Cumberland, Maine) won the one meter diving event. Shpaizer won her second event of the day with a time of 2:09.69 in the 200 back. Kiki O'Donnell (Hampden, Maine) took first place in the 200 breast in 2:29.07. Miller won the 500 free in 5:13.77 for her second win of the meet and Levy took first in the 100 fly in 1:00.77 for her second win. In the 200 IM, Settlage picked up the win in 2:14.93.

In the men's meet, Maine started with a win in the 200 medley relay. Michael Goede (Omaha, Neb.) took first in the 100 back with a time of 56.52. Nathan Richard (Vergennes, Vt.) won the 100 breast with a time of 59.14 and also added a first place in the 100 butterfly in 55.17. Martin Fitch (Bangor, Maine) won the 200 butterfly in 2:09.34, while Eric Palmer (Bangor, Maine) took first in the 200 breast in 2:16.07. Keith Burgie (Arundel, Maine) took first in the one meter and three meter diving events.
