Swimming and Diving Split Against Stony Brook

Final Stats

Stony Brook, NY - The University of Maine Swimming and Diving team split a dual meet with Stony Brook University today, as the women won 175-125 while the men fell 177-118.

The women were fueled by some outstanding individual performances on Saturday. Mimi Chovanec and Courtney Healey won two events each for Maine, as Chovanec won the 200 freestyle, 1:59.09, and the 500 freestyle, 5:11.15, and Healey took the 100 back, 1:01.45, and the 200 back, 2:10.59. In the 1000 yard freestyle Maine took the top three spots as Caitlin Shelley won in a time of 10:56.52, close behind her was Colleen Miller, 11:01.60, and Lily Herbold, 11:07:58. Adi Levy won the 200 butterfly, 2:11.93, while Kiki O'Donnell came second at 2:17.78. O'Donnell also came second in the 500 yard freestyle.

Despite the loss for the men's team, there were still some outstanding performances on Saturday. Freshmen Jeremy Bender turned in three first place finishes, winning the 200 butterfly, 2:03.03, the 500 yard freestyle, 4:58.38, and the 200 yard IM, 2:07.72. Tyler Cox added two great breaststroke performances, winning the 200 yard in a time of 2:24.37 and placing second in the 100 yard event in 1:06.08. In the 100 yard freestyle Cully Wakelin came in second, 49.50, while John Quinn placed fourth in a time of 51.01. The men's 200 yard freestyle relay team consisting of Wakelin, Quinn, Mike Goede, and Kevin Staples placed first with a time of 1:30.91.

 

 

Another clean sweep was made by the women's diving team as Megan Barrett, Samantha Graham and Laura Williamson took the top three spots in both the 1 meter and 3 meter diving events. For the men, Keith Burgie and Isaac Forbes placed second and third respectively in both the one and three meter dives.

The Black Bears return to action tomorrow, when they square off with Fairfield University at 12 p.m.
