Swimming and Diving Compete at Bowdoin
Nov. 20, 2007 Brunswick, Maine - The University of Maine men's and women's swim teams competed in an unscored meet against the Bowdoin Polar Bears on Monday night. Mackenzie Grobmyer won the first individual event of the meet for the women's team, winning the 400 yard IM in 4:44.28, edging teammate Kerstin Fenton who finished in 4:44.50. Fenton also won the 200 yard IM in 2:14.06, followed closely by Colleen Miller, 2:15.05, and Caitlin Shelley, 2:16.83. Captain Kiki O'Donnell won the 100 yard breaststroke in 1:09.92. Lily Herbold and Nissa Marione placed 1-2 in the 500 yard freestyle, as Herbold finished in 5:24.73 and Marione came in at 5:30.57. On the men's side, Cully Wakelin won the 100 yard freestyle, 48.84, and the 100 breaststroke, 1:03.17. Freshmen Jeremy Bender took the 400 yard IM in a time of 4:22.86. John Quinn won the 500 yard freestyle, touching the wall at 5:00.64. Quinn also helped the men's team take the top three places in the 50 yard freestyle, as Kevin Staples finished first, 22.88, Quinn finished second, 23.08, and Doug Moulton took third in 23.45. The 400 yard freestyle relay team consisting of Quinn, Staples, Dan MacDonald, and Jamie Young finished first in 3:23.22. The Black Bears will return to action November 30 when they head to the University of Rhode Island for the Rhode Island Invitational. At last year's Rhode Island Invitational the men's team took home second place and the women placed first.
