Dec. 8, 2008

Results

Kingston, R.I. - The University of Maine swimming and diving program traveled to Kingston, Rhode Island this weekend to take part in the two-day Harold Anderson Invitational. The Black Bear women's team finished second out of six teams with 721.50 total points while the men placed fourth out of seven teams with 547 points. Maine was led by captain Colleen Miller (Missoula, Mont.) who collected three individual freestyle event wins and Brian Landry (Yorktown, Va.) who placed second and third in the 200 and 100 breaststroke, respectively.

The Black Bear women's highlight came in the 1000 freestyle where Miller nabbed first with a time of 10:41.53, only to have teammate Mimi Chovanec (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) finish right behind her in second place in 10:50.24. Miller had already won the 500 freestyle in 5:10.57 and the 200 freestyle in 1:56.72 earlier in the meet. Maine also picked up points with several second place finishes by Caitlin Shelley (Charlottesville, Va.) in the 200 IM with a time of 2:16.26, Kerstin Fenton's (Dixon, Calif.) time of 1:01.36 in the 100 butterfly, Courtney Healey (Reading, Mass.) in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:14.24 and Lauren Thornbrough's (San Diego, Calif.) time of 2:12.43 in the 200 butterfly. Samantha Graham chipped in with a first place dive in the one meter with a score of 190.05.

Maine's men saw contributions from a familiar face in Jeremy Bender (St. Paul, Minn.) who swam his way to third place finishes in both the 500 and 1000 freestyle events with times of 4:56.78 and 10:11.51, respectively. Landry had the biggest day for the men when he got second in the 200 breaststroke in 2:13.19. Landry also secured third in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:02.32.

The Black Bear swimming and diving teams have some time to rest as they will not compete for the remainder of 2008. Maine will return to the water on Saturday, Jan. 17, as they host Providence College in the Stanley M. Wallace pool at 11 a.m. for their second to last home meet of the season.
