Swimming Completes Day Three Of AE Championships
Feb. 10, 2007 BOSTON, Mass. - The University of Maine men's and women's swimming and diving teams completed the third day of the America East Championships on Saturday night at Boston University. So far in the meet, the Black Bears have set four school records and had numerous strong performances. Maine opened the day with four swimmers scoring in the women's 400 IM. Meaghann Fisher (Carmel, Ind.) was eighth in 4:39.10, Mackenzie Grobmyer (Charlottesville, Va.) ninth in 4:41.10, Kiki O'Donnell (Hampden, Maine) twelfth in 4:47.09 and Sarah Holmsten (Red Wing, Minn.) fifteenth in 4:52.13. Tal Shpaizer (Shoham, Israel) and Adi Levy (Givatayim, Israel) were eleventh and twelfth in the 100 butterfly in 59.19 and 59.55, respectively. In the 200 free, Colleen Miller (Missoula, Montana) was fourth witha time of 1:52.64, while Kari Boffa (Falmouth, Maine) was thirteenth in 1:57.45. Meaghann Fisher added an eighth place finish in the 100 breast with a time of 1:08.69 and Megan McLean (Walpole, Mass.) was ninth in 1:09.06. Megan Wolters (Cleveland, Miss.) was fifth in the 100 back in 59.98, followed by Jessie Ellis-Alcaide (Harpswell, Maine) in tenth in 1:01.23 and Courtney Healey (Reading, Mass.) in eleventh in 1:01.25. The Black Bears' 400 medley relay was fifth overall. In the men's 400 IM, Eric Palmer (Bangor, Maine) was 14th in 4:23.31 and Brock Libby (Skowhegan, Maine) was 16th in 4:30.34. Doug Moulton (Alfred, Maine) was 16th in the 100 butterfly with a time of 56.33. In the 200 free, Cully Wakelin (Biddeford, Maine) was ninth in 1:45.16, followed by Kevin Staples (Mt. Desert, Maine) in 1:48.66 and John Quinn (Bangor, Maine) in 1:50.26 in 13th and 14th place, respectively. Maine had a strong showing in the 100 breast, as Nathan Richard (Vergennes, Vt.) was third in 57.09, going .01 under his school record set last season. Chris Card (West Bath, Maine) was fourth in 57.22 and Dustin Carrier (Lewiston, Maine) was 14th in 1:04.03. In the 100 back, Tyler Isherwood (Holden, Maine) was eleventh with a time of 55.37 and Mike Goede (Omaha, Neb.) was 13th in 56.36. Keith Burgie (Arundel, Maine) was sixth in the three meter diving event with 212.00 points and Isaac Forbes (Glenburn, Maine) was seventh with 210.90 points. Maine's 400 medley relay was fourth. Day three of competition featured thirteen scoring events, with 12 swimming events and the men's three-meter dive. On the men's side, the Retrievers (609.5 points) hold onto a strong lead, Binghamton remains in second with 538 points, and Stony Brook follows (380.5 ). Boston University (332) and Maine (272) round out the five-team field. The UMBC women (455) remain ahead of Boston University (426) and New Hampshire (414). Vermont (299) is in fourth, followed by Maine (287), while Stony Brook (199) and Binghamton (171) round out the rankings. The final day of the four-day event continues on Sunday with two sessions of events.
