ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The University of Maine men's and women's outdoor track teams opened the season on Saturday in a multi-team meet hosted by the Naval Academy. The Maine women were second with 132 points and the men were also second with 154 points. Clarissa Michalak won the hammer throw, Tory Irvine won the javelin and the women's 4x400 relay took first place for the Black Bears.

In the women's meet, Clarissa Michalak (Cumberland, Maine) won the hammer throw with a distance of 48.88 meters. Her distance broke the school record that was set in 2001 by Angela Pulcifer. In the 800 meters, Kristen Vidlak (Thunder Bay, Ontario) was second in 2:17.29 and Heather Jovanelli (Brewer, Maine) was fourth in 2:19.65. In the high jump, Erin Hatch (Saco, Maine) jumped 1.55 meters for second place and Amanda Virgets (Stevensville, Md.) was fourth, clearing 1.50 meters. Stephanie McCusker (Lisbon, Maine) was second in the triple jump at 11.05 meters. Micralyn Wiechman (Buxton, Maine) was third in the shot put with a throw of 11.75 meters and added a third place finish in the discus at 36.95 meters. In the 1500 meters, Hana Pelletier (Belgrade, Maine) was third in 4:47.05, while in the 100 meter hurdles Kathryn Souviney (East Vassalboro, Maine) was third in 15.67. Rachel McCaslin (Westbrook, Maine) was third in the long jump at 5.18 meters and Heather Zavaduk (Smithers, B.C.) was fourth in the pole vault at 3.35 meters. Kayla Rubin (Sanford, Maine) was fourth in the javelin with a throw of 32.66 meters and Lindsay Burlock (Caribou, Maine) was fourth in the 400 meters in 59.45. The 4x100 relay took first place with a time of 3:57.00.

 

 

In the men's meet, Troy Irvine (Waterville, Maine) was first with a throw of 54.56 meters in the javelin and added a fifth place in the 100 meters. Ababio Dzibodi (Willingboro, N.J.) was second in the shot put with a throw of 14.84 meters and was third in the discus with a throw of 40.37 meters. In the 5000 meters, Jeff Caron (Auburn, Maine) was second with a time of 14:57.37. In the long jump, Andrew Honer (Kennebunk, Maine) was second in 6.56 meters, while in the triple jump Carson Hartman (Fort Kent, Maine) was third with a jump of 12.96 meters. Maxwell Ludwig (South Portland, Maine) was third in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 15.74, with Christopher Warren (Woburn, Mass.) fourth in 16.31. Khabir Edwards (Portland, Maine) was fourth in the high jump at 1.85 meters and added a fourth place in the 400 meters in 50.54 meters. Donald Drake (Portland, Maine) was fourth in the 800 meters with a time of 1:55.93. The Black Bears 4x100 meter relay ream was second in 44.16.

Navy led the women with 258 points, followed by Maine with 132 points, Maryland with 93 points, Colgate with 46 and American University with 29 points. For the men, Navy had 259 points, followed by Maine with 154, Maryland with 91 points and American University with 65 points.
