Track Finishes Second At Holy Cross Invitational

WORCESTER, Mass. - The University of Maine men's and women's outdoor track and field teams took part in a multi-team meet on Saturday afternoon hosted by Holy Cross. The men's team was second out of six teams with 168 points, while the women were second with 171 points overall. The Black Bears were led with seven individual first place finishes for the men and five individual victories for the women in the meet.

For the men in the field events, Richard Cannon (Sanford, Maine) and Ryan Poulin (E. Winthrop, Maine) took the top two spots in the pole vault, with Cannon clearing 3.80 meters and Poulin clearing 3.65 meters. Maine also took the top two spots in the high jump as Jeff Ramos (Turner, Maine) was first at 2.00 meters and Christopher Warren (Woburn, Mass.) was second at 1.95 meters. In the javelin, Toby Poirer (Lewiston, Maine) was second with a throw of 51.62 meters. In the discus, Herbert Ryan (Ellsworth, Maine) was fourth with a throw of 38.15 meters.

On the track for the men, Jonathan McGonagle (Portland, Maine) opened things up with a first place finish in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 10:03.49. Miles Bartlett (Casco, Maine) won the 1500 meters in 4:00.07. In the 110 meter hurdles, Maxwell Ludwig (South Portland, Maine) was first in 14.54 and Christopher Warren was second in 15.34. Eric Libby (Hampden, Maine) won the 800 meters in 1:54.05 and Daniel Voner (Dresden, Maine) was fourth in 1:55.60. In the 400 meter hurdles, Matthew Holman (Gardiner, Maine) was first in 55.91 and Maxwell Ludwig was third in 57.67. In the 5000 meters, David Englehutt (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) was third in 15:46.49 and Charles Therriault (Clinton, Mass.) was fourth with a time of 15:54.96. Maine was fourth in the 4x100 relay and first in the 4x400 relay.

 

 

In the women's field events, Erin Hatch (Saco, Maine) won the high jump by clearing 1.65 meters. Allyson Thomas (Auburn, Maine) won the pole vault by going 3.10 meters. In the long jump, Rachel McCaslin (Westbrook, Maine) was first at 5.50 meters and Tess Perry (Farmington, Maine) was third at 5.24 meters. Katie Donnelly (Westbrook, Maine) was second in the triple jump with a distance of 10.80 meters and Sarah Parsons (Hampden, Maine) was fourth in the discus with a throw of 33.79 meters. In the hammer throw, Clarissa Michalak (Cumberland, Maine) was second with a throw of 49.70 meters.

For the women in the track events, Allyson Howatt (Fredericton, New Brunswick) was second in the 100 meters in 12.32 and Tess Perry (Farmington, Maine) was fourth in 12.70. In the 400 meters, Hana Pelletier (Belgrade, Maine) was third with a time of 56.80. In the 800 meters, Stephanie Jette (Lovell, Maine) was second in 2:17.26 and Vanessa Letourneau (Fairfield, Maine) was third in 2:17.39. Freshman Jessica Belliveau (Quispamsis, New Brunswick) won the 1500 meters in 4:38.80. In the 5000 meters, Maine took three of the top five places as Elonnai Hickok (Rutledge, Pa.) was first in 18:24.13, Brenna Walsh (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) was third in 19:02.28 and Laura Brustolon (Mystic, Conn.) was fifth in 19:06.77. Courtney Francis (Waltham, Maine) was second in both the 100 meter hurdles in 15.15 and the 400 meter hurdles in 1:07.47. In the 3000 meter steeplechase, Erin Lawler (Jay, Maine) was third in 12:05.55. The Black Bears 4x100 relay was first in 49.72 and the 4x400 relay was third.

The men's meet was won by Holy Cross with 200 points. Maine was second with 168 points, followed by Colgate with 129.5 points, Central Connecticut State with 100 points, Hartford with 87.5 points and America International with 21 points. The women's meet was won by Rhode Island with 230 points, followed by Maine with 171 points, Holy Cross with 163 points and Hartford with 63 points.

Maine will send select student-athletes to the Penn Relays from April 26-28 in Philadelphia, and the team will also compete at the UMass Invitational on April 28, the final meet before the America East Championships on May 5-6 at UMBC.
