![]() Track Teams Compete At Holy Cross Invitational

WORCESTER, Mass. - The University of Maine men's and women's outdoor track teams participated in the Holy Cross Invitational hosted by Holy Cross College on Saturday. The men took first place in a seven-team meet, while the women were second overall in a six-team meet. Christopher Warren won two events, while six men and eight women won individual events. For the women, the Black Bears took the top three spots in the 3000 meter steeplechase, led by Jessica Hudec (Chicago, Ill.) in 12:26.13 with Nerissa Gross (Lisbon, Maine) second in 12:45.39 and Erin Lawler (Waterville, Maine) third in 12:50.14. Heather Jovanelli (Brewer, Maine) won the 1500 meters in 4:50.89, while Erin Hatch (Saco, Maine) took first place in the 100 meter hurdles in 15.25. In the 100 meters, Maine took the top two spots as Samantha Homer (Charlton, Mass.) was first in 12.91 and Rachel McCaslin (Westbrook, Maine) was second in 12.97. Maine also took the top two spots in the 800 meters, as Hana Pelletier (Belgrade, Maine) was first in 2:16.64 and Kristen Vidlak (Thunder Bay, Ontario) was second in 2:17.69. Katelyn Andrle (Clifton, Maine) was second in the 400 meter hurdles, while Samantha Homer was second in the 200 meters in 26.77.
The Black Bear women added a first place finish in the 4x100 relay. In the women's field events, Rachel McCaslin (Westbrook, Maine) was first in the long jump at 5.49 meters. Stephanie McCusker (Lisbon, Maine) took first place in the triple jump with a distance of 11.37 meters and Samantha Homer was second in 10.56 meters. In the hammer throw, Clarissa Michalak (Cumberland, Maine) was second with a throw of 46.76 meters, while Micralyn Wiechman (Buxton, Maine) was second in the shot put with a throw of 11.83 meters. Wiechman added a first place finish in the discus with a throw of 37.62 meters. In the men's meet, Jonathan McGonagle (Portland, Maine) and Tyler Littlefield (York, Maine) took the top two spots in the 3000 meter steeplechase in 10:06.13 and 10:22.97, respectively. In the 1500 meters, Paul Rupprecht (Yonkers, N.Y.) edged out Donald Drake (Portland, Maine) by four hundredths of a second. Rupprecht finished in 4:01.64, while Drake crossed the line in 4:01.68. Drake picked up a first place finish in the 800 meters in 1:55.35, as he edged out Rupprecht who finished in 1:55.59. Eric Libby (Hampden, Maine) and Daniel Voner (Hallowell, Maine) gave the Black Bears the top four finishers in the event. Christopher Warren (Woburn, Mass.) finished the 110 meter hurdles in 15.45 to take first place by one hundredth of a second. Kirby Davis (Falmouth, Maine) was first in the 5000 meters with a time of 15:05.64. The Black Bear men were first in the 4x400 meter relay and added a second place finish in the 4x100 meter relay. In field events, Dzigbodi Ababio (Willingboro, N.J.) was first in the shot put with a throw of 15.57 meters. Justin Averill (South Portland, Maine) took first in the discus with a throw of 40.88 meters. In the high jump, Christopher Warren (Woburn, Mass.) won the high jump, clearing 1.90 meters.Carson Hartman (Fort Kent, Maine) was second in the long jump at 6.44 meters and the triple jump at 13.42 meters. Earlier in the week at Holy Cross, Amanda Virgets (Stevensville, Md.) took first place in the heptathlon with 4423 points. She won the 100 meter hurdles, 200 meters and 800 meters in the event. Troy Irvine (Waterville, Maine) was second in the decathlon with 5995 points. He cleared 4.25 meters to win the pole vault in the event. The men were first with 223.5 points, followed by Holy Cross with 151, Central Connecticut State with 113, RPI with 97, Colgate with 79, Hartford with 37 and Assumption College with 15.5 points. The Holy Cross women were first with 246 points, followed by the Black Bears with 229, RPI with 77, Hartford with 58, Central Connecticut State with 55 and Assumption College with 35 points. Next week the Black Bears will participate in the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa. from April 26-29 and also will compete on April 29 at New Hampshire.
