Track Takes First Place At Holy Cross Invitational

WORCESTER, Mass. - The University of Maine men's and women's track and field teams both took first place in the Holy Cross Invitational on Saturday. The women led the field with 197 points, while the men had 160 points for first place. Silvia Scaldaferri was the only multiple event winner for the Black Bears, taking first in the 200 meters and long jump.

In the women's meet, Silvia Scaldaferri (Vancouver, British Columbia) took first in the 200 meters in 25.98, first place in the long jump at 5.44 meters, and added a third place finish in the 100 meters. In the 400 meters, Lindsay Burlock (Caribou, Maine) was first with a time of 59.14, while Hana Pelletier (Belgrade, Maine) was first in the 800 meters in 2:13.94. The Black Bears took the top three spots in the 100 meter hurdles, led by Kathryn Souviney (East Vassalboro, Maine) in 14.82 and followed by Courtney Francis (Waltham, Maine) and Heather Groder (Wilton, Maine). In the high jump, Erin Hatch (Saco, Maine) cleared 1.50 meters for first place. Stephanie McCusker (Lisbon, Maine) and Carly Bunyan (Troy, Nova Scotia) were first and second in the triple jump at 10.77 meters and 10.00 meters, respectively. Micralyn Wiechman (Buxton, Maine) was second in both the shot put and the discus throw. In the hammer throw, Clarissa Michalak (Cumberland, Maine) took first place with a throw of 41.60 meters and Kristina Gonzalez (Newport, Maine) was second in the javelin throw at 31.76 meters.

 

 

For the men, Ivi Nwosu (Bridgewater, Mass.) was second in both the 100 meters at 11.24 and the 200 meters at 23.15. In the 800 meters, Scott O'Connor (East Greenville, Pa.) took second place with a time of 1:56.32. Eric Libby (Hampden, Maine) took third in the 400 meters in 50.04 and Christopher Warren (Woburn, Mass.) was third in the 110 meter hurdles in 16.19. In the 1500 meters, the Black Bears took the top three spots, led by Andy Caron (Topsham, Maine) in 4:00.67 and followed by Paul Rupprecht (Yonkers, N.Y.) in 4:00.76 and Mike Lansing (Lovell, Maine) in 4:03.58. Lansing added a first place finish in the 5000 meters with a time of 15:11.83, with Kirby Davis (Falmouth, Maine) finishing third. Patrick Guerette (Fairfield, Maine) was third in the 3000 meter steeplechase in 10:08.73. Warren took first place in the high jump, clearing 1.80 meters. Jesse Ludwig (South Portland, Maine) was second in the long jump at 6.44 meters and third in the triple jump at 12.65 meters. Keith Corey (Scarborough, Maine) was Maine's top finisher in the shot put at 12.44 meters, while Anthony Morgan (South Berwick, Maine) was second in the discus throw at 34.18 meters.

Also this weekend at the Holy Cross Heptathlon, Amanda Virgets (Stevensville, Md.) took fourth place overall with 3649 points. In the Holy Cross Decathalon, Troy Irvine (Waterville, Maine) was seventh overall with 5560 points.

For the women, Maine had 197 points, Holy Cross 171, Vermont 145, RPI 83, Hartford 50 and Assumption College 40. The men posted 160 points, followed by Colgate 149, Holy Cross 124.5, RPI 118.5, Vermont 50, Assumption College 45 and Hartford 24.
