Track Competes At America East Championships
May 8, 2005 VESTAL, N.Y. - The University of Maine men's and women's track and field teams took part in the America East Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Binghamton University. The Black Bears were led by Mike Lansing with individual championships in the 3000 meter steeplechase and the 5000 meters. The Maine women finished sixth overall with 76 points, while the men were fifth with 86 points. On the first day of competition for the women, Silvia Scaldaferri (Vancouver, British Columbia) took third place in the long jump with a jump of 5.51 meters. In the hammer throw, Clarissa Michalak (Cumberland, Maine) was third with a throw of 46.05 meters. The Black Bears placed three finishers in the javelin throw, as Kathryn Souviney (East Vassalboro, Maine) was third at 36.09 meters, Kristina Gonzalez (Newport, Maine) was fifth at 33.14 meters, and Mary McDonagh (Newton, Mass.) was seventh at 29.74 meters. During the second day for the women, Hana Pelletier (Belgrade, Maine) got things off to a fast start by winning the 800 meters in a time of 2:12.57 for the second straight year. Erin Hatch (Saco, Maine) added a first place finish in the high jump, clearing 1.58 meters. In the 100 meter hurdles, Souviney took second place with a time of 14.20. Stephanie McCusker (Lisbon, Maine) was seventh in the triple jump, going 11.53 meters. In the shot put, McDonagh was sixth with a throw of 11.58 meters, while Micralyn Wiechman (Buxton, Maine) was seventh with a throw of 11/26 meters. Amanda Virgets (Stevensville, Md.) was third in the hepathlon with 3918 points. In the 4x800 meter relay, the Black Bears took second place in 9:31.38 and added a sixth place finish in the 4x100 relay.
In the opening day's events for the men, Michael Lansing took the 3000 meter steeplechase championship with a time of 9:03.09, which qualified for the NCAA Regionals. In the high jump, Christopher Warren (Woburn, Mass.) was third, clearing 1.88 meters. Jesse Ludwig (South Portland, Maine) was fifth in the long jump, going 6.85 meters. In the hammer throw, Anthony Morgan (South Berwich, Maine) was sixth with a throw of 48.82 meters. Joshua Trevino (Rochester, N.H.) was eighth in the 10,000 meters with a time of 32:51.35. On the second day for the men, Lansing continued to shine, taking first place in the 5000 meters with a time of 15:02.84. Kirby Davis (Falmouth, Maine) was third in the 5000 meters in 15:15.80. In the 1500 meters, Paul Rupprecht (Yonkers, N.Y.) was fifth in 3:57.98, whlie Edward Caron (Topsham, Maine) was eighth in 3:59.89. Scott O'Connor (East Greenville, Pa.) was seconds in the 800 meters with a time of 1:54.37. In the 400 meters, Eric Libby (Hampden, Maine) took seventh place with a time of 49.82. In the 110 meter hurdles, Warren was fifth with a time of 15:49. Ludwig added a fifth place finish in the triple jump, going 13.68 meters. In the shot put, Morgan was seventh with a throw of 13.40 meters. Troy Irvine (Waterville, Maine) finished second in the decathlon with 5813 points, winning three of the ten events. In the 4x800 meter relay, the Black Bears took second place in 7:40.56, while the 4x100 team was sixth and the 4x400 team was sixth as well. For the women overall, Northeastern took first place with 192 points, followed by Boston University (124.5), New Hampshire (113), Binghamton (95.5), Albany (83), Maine (76), UMBC (72), Vermont (60), Stony Brook (25) and Hartford (12). Overall, the men's meet was won by Albany (192.83), followed by New Hampshire (177), UMBC (110), Binghamton (98.5), Maine (87), Northeastern (76.67), Boston University (58), Stony Brook (23), Vermont (21) and Hartford (6). Next up for the Black Bears will be the New England Championships at the University of New Hampshire on May 13-14 and IC4A/ECAC Championships at Princeton on May 14-15.
