UMaine Women's Track Team's Forgues Qualifies for Olympic Trials

University of Maine sophomore Lauren Forgues recently competed in the racewalk event at the USATF World Cup Trials in Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Oregon. Forgues walked 8 minutes faster than her personal best of 1:53:38 to take ninth place with a time of 1:45:45. It ensured her qualification for the U.S. Olympic Trials. The race was won by Olympian Teresa Vail who was the oldest USA Olympic athlete at the Summer Games in Athens in 2004. She finished with a time of 1:36:18. Forgues trains at the University of Maine and with the Norwegian National Racewalk Team in Flagstaff, Ariz. during the year. Her ninth place finish also placed her as the first alternate for Team USA at the World Cup competition in Cheboksary, Russia this May. A total of 55 countries and more than 600 athletes are expected to compete at the World Racewalking Cup competition. Forgues was the youngest competitor in the field at the Trials. Lauren is a sophomore undecided major at the University of Maine. Her accomplishments at UMaine include a fourth place at the Greater Boston Track Club Invitational (Jan. 21) in the mixed 3000m racewalk with a time of 4:32.67 during the 2006-07 season. During the 2005-06 season, she was a member of the 2006 Cross Country squad, named a Maine Scholar-Athlete Rising Star, and also named to the America East Commissioner's Honor Roll. Before UMaine, she was captain her junior and senior year at Boothbay Regional High School for coaches Julianne Duley and Dick Morrison. She was also a three-time Team USA member for the racewalk.
