Three Women's Track and Field Standouts Qualify For Major Competitions

May 7, 2008

ORONO, Maine- Three University of Maine women's track and field standouts have qualified for major track and field competitions. Rebecca Even (Stoneham, Maine), Allyson Howatt (Fredericton, New Brunswick) and Vicki Tolton (Smithers, British Columbia) will all be training to possibly compete during the summer.

Even, a freshman, took runner-up honors in the hammer throw at the America East Championships at the Beckett Family Track and Field Complex last weekend. Her throw of 158-08 qualified her for the ECAC Championships as well as the prestigious USA Junior Track and Field Championships at Jesse Owens Stadium at The Ohio State University. She will be competing on June 20th, and should she place high enough she will be selected for the USA National Junior Team which competes at the World Junior Track and Field Championships in Poland from July 8 through July 13.

Howatt, a sophomore, won the 100 meter and 200 meter dashes, as well as anchoring the winning 4x400 meter relay team at the America East Championships. She was named the women's outstanding track performer for the meet. Howatt qualified for the Canadian Olympic Track and Field Trials with times of 11.96 and 24.17 in the 100 meter and 200 meter dash, respectively. The trials take place from July 3-6 at the University of Windsor in Windsor, Ontario.

Tolton, a junior, won the 400 meter dash at the America East Championships. Her time of 55.94 was more than a second better than the qualifying Canadian Olympic Trial qualifying time of 57.00. Tolton was also a member of the America East Champion 4x400 meter relay team.

The track and field teams return to action Friday as they compete in the New England Championships held at the University of New Hampshire in Durham, N.H.
