Four Women's Track and Field Standouts Compete at Canadian Olympic Trials

WINDSOR, Ontario--Four University of Maine track and field standouts compiled solid performances at the Canadian Olympic Trials at the University of Windsor Stadium over the weekend. Allyson Howatt (Fredericton, New Brunswick), Tanya Simard (North Bay, Ontario), Vicki Tolton (Smithers, British Columbia) and incoming freshman Jessica Bond (Namur, Québec) all performed well against Canada's best athletes. Howatt came in ninth in the preliminaries of the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.17, but placed fourth in her 200 meter preliminary race with a time of 24.91, which qualified her for the finals. In the finals, she won her heat and ran in a time of 24.48 to take ninth place. Simard placed sixth in her flight in the triple jump with a leap of 11.03 meters (36-2 feet) and was 13th in the preliminaries of the long jump with a leap of 5.23 meters (17-2 feet). Tolton ran the 400 meter dash in 55.86 in the preliminaries to qualify for the finals and ran 56.75 in the finals to take eighth place.
