Volleyball Splits in North Carolina Central Tournament
Aug. 29, 2008 ORONO, Maine--The University of Maine volleyball team opened the season with a 3-1 win over Florida Gulf Coast University in the North Carolina Central Tournament. The Black Bears dropped the first set 22-25, before rebounding to take the next three sets 25-21, 25-12 and 25-17. Maine dropped the second match to Elon 3-1 with scores of 25-23, 21-25, 22-25, 20-25. Maine won the first match 3-1. After dropping the first set, Maine never looked back and rolled to victory. The Black Bears finished with a .579 hitting percentage in the third set, recording 11 kills on 19 total attacks without committing an error. The Black Bears finished the match with a 10-0 advantage in blocks. Lindsay Allman (St. Louis, Mo.) led the Black Bears and she had 14 kills and nine digs in the match. Margaret Page (Winnetka, Ill.) finished with 10 kills. Jessica Wolfenden (Ottawa, Ontario) had 30 assists in the match. Laura Goettsch (Woodstock, Ontario) finished with eight digs and four block assists, while Ashlee Wright (Muncie, Ind.) had eight digs as well. Brittany Kiehl (Virginia Beach, Va.) had two solo blocks in the match. In the second match, Maine dropped a 3-1 decision to Elon. The Black bears were led by Allman who had 14 digs and 10 kills. Goettsch chipped in with 14 kills, while Wright had 14 digs. Kiehl had five blocks. The Black Bears return to action on Saturday when they face UNC Ashville in Durham, N.C. at 12:00 noon.
