Volleyball Drops 3-2 Decision to Cornell

Storrs, Conn. - The University of Maine volleyball team lost their final match of the University of Connecticut Toyota Classic in five sets to Cornell. Maine (6-7) dropped the first set 23-25, but took the second set 25-20. Cornell (1-5) reclaimed control to win the third set 23-25 before the Black Bears responded once more to take the fourth set 25-15. Maine couldn't keep it going as they lost the final set 9-15. Laura Goettsch (Woodstock, Ontario) led the Black Bears with 13 kills and 13 digs.

Jessica Wolfenden (Ottawa, Ontario) shined in the loss as she amassed 47 assists, seven digs and served four aces. Taking advantage of her assists, freshman Samantha Andreozzi (North Kingstown, R.I.) had her second consecutive nine kill match, reaching the mark earlier in the day against Connecticut. Lindsay Allman (St. Louis, Mo.) had nine kills and a team-high 17 digs. Ashlee Wright (Muncie, Ind.) had 15 digs and Megan Smith (Dayton, Ohio) had 12 digs as they joined Allman and Goettsch as the four Maine players that reached double-digit digs in the match.

Cornell was led by Meagan Tatum (Roxboro, N.C.) with 14 kills.

The Black Bears return to action on September 26th when they come home to take on the Husson College Eagles at 7 p.m. in the Memorial Gym.
