Volleyball Splits Pair of Matches Saturday at Dartmouth Invitational
Sept. 24, 2005
HANOVER, N.H. - The University of Maine volleyball team split its pair of matches Saturday at the Dartmouth Invitational in Hanover, N.H. The Black Bears started off the day by defeating Harvard, 3-1, by scores of 23-30, 30-28, 30-20, 30-26. It was the second-consecutive win for Maine, but it couldn't keep the momentum going as Dartmouth defeated the Black Bears, 3-1 (28-30, 30-27, 30-26, 30-26), in the tournament's finale. Senior co-captain Kaili Jordan (Raymore, Saskatchewan) and freshman Lindsay Allman (Fenton, Mo.) were named to the all-tournament team for their performances. Overall, Jordan tallied 38 kills and 12 digs, while Allman totaled 35 kills, 31 digs and two service aces. Senior Shannan Fotter (Riverside, Calif.) also had a strong tournament by posting 23 kills and eight blocks. Jordan and Allman led the way for Maine in the day's first match versus Harvard. Allman had a match-high 19 kills, while Jordan added 17. After dropping the first match by a score of 30-23, Maine rallied to win the next three games, including a strong 30-20 victory in game three to put it ahead 2-1. Freshman Amy Lawson (Coeur D'Alene, Idaho) had four blocks in the match.
The Black Bears started out strong in the day's second match versus Dartmouth, as they won the first game by a count of 30-28. However, the Big Green won the next three matches in close fashion by margins of just three, four and four. Lawson, again, had a strong match as she had five blocks. Only Fotter's total of six were better. Jordan had a match-high 21 kills, while Allman chipped in 16. Maine's offensive attack was aided by junior setter Shelly Seipp (Spokane, Wash.), who registered 56 assists in the match and totaled 97 in both contests.
Maine improved to 3-8 with the split and will now get ready for America East play next weekend. The Black Bears will open conference play Friday night, as they play host to New Hampshire at Memorial Gym at 7 p.m. Maine finished third in the conference's regular season in 2004 after posting a 10-4 record. |
