Volleyball Sweeps New Hampshire 3-0

Orono, Maine - The University of Maine volleyball team opened America East-play Friday night with a 3-0 sweep of New Hampshire at Memorial Gym in Orono. The Black Bears won by scores of 30-27, 30-19 and 32-30, to run their record to 4-8 overall and 1-0 in the conference. The match marked the first time the Black Bears had played at home in more than a month. Maine's last home match came against Montana back on Aug. 27. Maine was led with 11 kills from senior co-captain Kaili Jordan (Raymore, Saskatchewan), while freshman Lindsay Allman (Fenton, Mo.) added 10 kills. Seniors Leah Guidinger (Prince Albert, Saskatchewan) and Shannan Fotter (Riverside, Calif.) each chipped in nine kills. The Black Bears had to overcome an early 8-2 deficit to win the first game by a score of 30-27. A kill by Allman gave Maine its first lead of the game at 15-14, as the contest featured five ties and four lead changes the rest of the way. Erin Walker's attack error for New Hampshire (2-13 overall, 0-1 AE) sealed the win for Maine in the first game. The Wildcats raced out to an early 4-3 lead in game two, but Maine scored 11 of the next 15 points to take a14-8 lead and never look back. The third game saw the lead change hands several times. A kill by Walker tied the game at 30-30 for New Hampshire. However, the Black Bears tallied the final-two points to pull out the win in the game and the match. A kill by Jordan gave Maine a 31-30 edge and an attack error by New Hampshire's Emmy Blouin wrapped up the victory for Maine.
Junior setter Shelly Seipp (Spokane, Wash.) led Maine with 37 kills and had a solo block in the third game. Fotter had four blocks in addition to her nine kills. Seipp and Jordan each had two service aces in the victory.
Maine will be back in action Sunday as it faces UMBC at 1 p.m., in Baltimore, Md. |
