Volleyball Sweeps UMBC, 3-0, Sunday

BALTIMORE, Md. - The University of Maine volleyball team won its second-straight America East match Sunday by pulling off a 3-0 sweep of UMBC at the RAC Arena in Baltimore, Md. The Black Bears won by scores of 30-24, 30-16 and 30-26, to improve to 5-8 overall and 2-0 in the conference. UMBC fell to 6-11 and 0-2 in America East.

Maine was led by senior Shannan Fotter (Riverside, Calif.), who totaled a match-high 15 kills and added three blocks. Classmate and co-captain Leah Guidinger (Prince Albert, Saskatchewan) chipped in 11 kills and two blocks. Junior setter Shelly Seipp (Spokane, Wash.) totaled 42 assists and two service aces, while Jody Connacher (Spokane, Wash.) registered a match-high three service aces. The Black Bears as a team, had 52 kills, while the Retrievers only managed 25.

Sarah Ball led UMBC with 11 kills and two service aces, while Christine Skala added 11 digs. The Retrievers struggled as they managed to only hit .076 as a team.

With the score tied at 12 midway through the first game, Maine mounted an 8-1 run to go up 20-13. Freshman Lindsay Allman (Fenton, Mo.) had three kills during the run, as the Black Bears never trailed the rest of the way in posting the 30-24 win.

The Black Bears carried over that momentum into the second game as they raced out to a 7-1 lead and never looked back in posting a 30-16 victory. Guidinger registered five kills in the game, while Fotter and Kaili Jordan (Raymore, Saskatchewan) each totaled four.

Maine trailed 25-22 late in the third game, but went on an 8-1 run to close out the game, 30-26, and pull off the sweep. The Black Bears have begun conference play with a pair of 3-0 sweeps. They opened conference play Friday night at home with a 3-0 win over New Hampshire.

 

 

The Black Bears will return to action next Sunday, as they play host to Hartford at 1 p.m., at Memorial Gym in Orono.
