Volleyball Falls in Three Straight to Albany

Oct. 7, 2007

Box Score

ALBANY, New York - The University of Maine volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (14-30, 19-30, 19-30) decision to Albany on sunday afternoon. Maine fell to 1-15 on the season and 0-3 in America East, while Albany improved to 13-6 and 3-1 in America East.

Maine was led in kills by junior Amy Lawson who tallied 11. Classmates Lindsay Allman and Laura Goettsch finished with eight and seven, respectively. Goettsch made her first start of the season for Maine coming off a wrist injury that had sidelined her for the start of the season. Freshman Emily Root led the Black Bears with a match-high 15 digs. Allman also added 12 digs of her own. Freshman Paige Tortorello recorded a team-high 17 assists followed up by junior Jessica Wolfenden with nine for the Black Bears.

Albany was led in kills by Kathleen Schauer who posted a match-high 13. Amanda Cowdrey and Valerie Sourbeer each added 12 and 11 kills, respectively, of their own in the match. Cowdrey also had five service aces in the match. The Great Danes were led in assists by Brooke Stanley who had a match high of 43. Kate Eckhardt led the team in digs with 13.

The Great Danes seemed to have Maine's number early when they took a 30-14 first game decision. But Maine fought right back in the second game making it a close one but coming short 30-19. The third game was more of the same seeing Albany take the match with a third game score of 30-19. The Great Danes' 54 kills seemed too much for the Black Bears and Maine's 23 attack errors didn't help much either in the loss.

But a silver lining might be in the making when Maine returns home next weekend with now healthy Laura Goettsch making her home season debut to take on the Hartford Hawks and the Stony Brook Seawolves October 12 and 14 in the Memorial Gym.
