Volleyball Falls at Stony Brook 3-1

ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine volleyball team dropped a second-straight 3-1 decision on Sunday, this time to the Stony Brook Seawolves in Stony Brook, N.Y. The Black Bears fell by scores of 30-17, 21-30, 29-31 and 26-30. Maine is now 4-13 overall and 2-2 in America East. Stony Brook improved to 9-11 and 2-1 in the league. Sophomore Lindsay Allman (Fenton, Mo.) led Maine with a match-high 18 kills, two service aces, 15 digs and a block. Classmate Jessica Wolfenden (Ottawa, Ontario) added nine kills, while Amy Lawson (Coeur D'Alene, Idaho) and Brittany Kiehl (Virginia Beach, Va.) tallied five and four kills, respectively. The Black Bears jumped out to a 6-3 lead early in the first game as they cruised to an easy 30-17 victory. Maine led by as many as 13 in the contest. Allman tallied four kills in the game while sophomore Laura Goettsch (Woodstock, Ontario) posted a trio of kills. In the second game, Stony Brook scored the initial three points and led the entire way in pulling out the 30-21 win and evening the match. The third game was the most exciting of the day. The Black Bears raced out to an early 6-1 advantage. Maine pushed its lead out to seven at 22-15 on a kill by Wolfenden, but the Seawolves made their rally. Stony Brook scored 10 of the next 12 points to grab a slim 25-24 lead. The game saw five ties the rest of the way, as Maine pulled even at 29-29 on an Allman kill. However, a kill by Morgan Sweany and an attack error by Lawson gave Stony Brook the game by a score of 31-29.
Stony Brook also rallied from an early deficit in game four to win the game (30-26) and the match. A kill by Lawson staked Maine to a 9-4 edge early, but the Seawolves answered with a 9-3 run to go up 13-12. They led the rest of the way in winning the game and the match.
Maine returns to action on Friday when it plays host to defending America East regular season champion Albany. The match will begin at 7 p.m. at Memorial Gym. Admission is free for all of Maine's home matches at Memorial Gym. |
