Volleyball Falls 3-2 at Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The University of Maine volleyball team dropped its second-straight 3-2 decision Sunday; this time falling to Stony Brook at the SBU Complex. The Seawolves won by scores of 21-30, 40-38, 26-30, 30-18, 15-10, to improve to 8-12 overall and 2-3 in America East play. The Black Bears fell to 6-10 and 3-2 in the conference. Maine was led by senior co-captain Leah Guidinger (Prince Albert, Saskatchewan), who had a team-high 17 kills. Guidinger was one of four Black Bears who registered double-digit kills in the contest. In addition to Guidinger, Amy Lawson (Coeur D'Alene, Idaho), Shannan Fotter (Riverside, Calif.) and Lindsay Allman (Fenton, Mo.) had 15, 14 and 13 kills, respectively. Lawson also had seven blocks in addition to her kills. Junior Shelly Seipp (Spokane, Wash.) posted a match-high 59 assists and totaled three service aces. In the first game, Maine broke a 9-9 tie by going on an 11-4 run to grab a 20-13 lead and never look back. Guidinger had four kills during the spurt, while Fotter and Lawson had two each. The early part of the second game featured six lead changes before Maine grabbed a 25-21 advantage. However, Stony Brook responded and tied the game at 28. The game went back-and-forth the rest of the way before the Seawolves pulled out the two-point win. The Black Bears responded with a 30-26 win in the third game, but the Seawolves answered with a 30-18 victory in game four to send it to a deciding fifth game. Stony Brook jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the fifth game to clinch the win.
Maine will return home Friday to face Albany at 4 p.m., at Memorial Gym.
