Volleyball Drops Tough 3-2 Decision at Binghamton

VESTAL, N.Y. - The University of Maine volleyball team dropped a tough 3-2 decision to Binghamton on Friday night in Vestal, N.Y. The Black Bears fell by scores of 30-23, 24-30, 21-30, 34-32 and 8-15. Maine fell to 4-15 overall and 2-4 in America East play.

The Black Bears were led in kills by sophomore Laura Goettsch (Woodstock, Ontario), as she recorded a career-high 16 kills. Classmate Amy Lawson (Coeur D'Alene, Idaho) tallied 15 kills, while Jessica Wolfenden (Ottawa, Ontario) and Brittany Kiehl (Virginia Beach, Va.) each registered 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Senior co-captain Shelly Seipp (Spokane, Wash.) recorded 53 assists.

Maine held a slim 23-21 lead late in the first game, but went on a 7-2 run the rest of the way to pull out a seven-point victory. The late run was aided by three kills from Lawson and one each from Wolfenden and Goettsch.

Binghamton raced out to a 9-1 lead early in the second game, but the Black Bears slowly crawled back into it. Maine pulled within one at 19-18 late on a service ace by Wolfenden. However, the Bearcats scored 11 of the final 17 points in the game to even the match at one win apiece.

The third game was close in the early stages as Maine stayed within one at 11-10. However, Binghamton answered with a 14-5 run to open up a 26-15 advantage and lead the rest of the way in taking a 2-1 edge in the match.

Maine evened the match at two apiece in the fourth game with a 34-32 win. The Black Bears trailed 31-30 late, but scored four of the final five points to win. A pair of kills by Goettsch sparked the late run to victory. However, Binghamton pulled out a 15-8 victory in game five to win the match.

 

 

Maine returns to action on Saturday when it travels to face Long Island at 3 p.m. The match will serve as the Black Bears' final non-conference match of the regular season.
