Box Score

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The University of Maine volleyball team snapped a three-match losing streak Sunday by sweeping Hartford, 3-0, at the Hartford Student-Athletic Center. The Black Bears, who pulled off their second sweep of the Hawks this season, won by scores of 31-29, 30-7 and 30-23. Maine improved to 7-11 overall and 4-3 in America East, while Hartford fell to 8-16 and 0-7 in the league.

Senior Shannan Fotter (Riverside, Calif.) paced the Black Bears with 15 kills, while classmate Kaili Jordan (Raymore, Saskatchewan) added 10. Junior setter Shelly Seipp (Spokane, Wash.) totaled 38 assists, while freshman Brittany Kiehl (Virginia Beach, Va.) posted a career-high five blocks. Fotter also had four service aces, while Jody Connacher (Spokane, Wash.) registered a match-high five.

After a closely contested first game which saw Maine score the final-two points to pull out the win, the Black Bears responded by cruising to an easy game-two victory. The Black Bears raced out to a 15-3 lead and never looked back in winning the set by 23 points. Fotter led Maine with five kills in the game, while Connacher totaled two of her service aces.

Hartford tried to mount a rally in the third game and pulled within 17-16 late, but Maine countered by scoring 13 of the final 20 points to take the game and the match.

Maine returns to action next Sunday as it travels to Durham, N.H., to face New Hampshire at 1 p.m. The Black Bears opened conference player earlier this season with a 3-0 sweep of the Wildcats at Memorial Gym.
