Volleyball Defeats Stony Brook 3-1

ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine women's volleyball team won two straight games to give them the 3-1 victory against the Seawolves of Stony Brook on Friday evening at Memorial Gymnasium. With the win the Black Bears improve to 5-16, 3-5 in America East while the Seawolves record falls to 12-13, 5-3. Both teams battled back and forth for the lead in the first game. In the end the Black Bears registered four unanswered points to win, 32-30. The Seawolves tied the series 1-1 in the second game with a 30-28 victory. Maine went up 25-14 in the third game, the Seawolves battled back but it wasn't enough as the Black Bears won 30-21. In another close set, Maine won the final game, 30-28 to give them the match win. The final point of the match was on a kill by sophomore outside hitter Laura Goettsch (Woodstock, Ontario), who lead the team with 17 kills in the match. Sophomore Lindsay Allman (Fenton, Mo.) and freshman Amanda Armstrong (Waukesha, Wis.) also contributed with 11 kills a piece. Allman also registered a team high 24 digs on the match. Armstrong and Goettsch both earned five block assists, while Armtrong had an additional solo block. Senior setter Shelly Seipp (Spokane, Wash.) tallied 47 sets, including 13 each during the first two games. The Black Bears travel to host Hartford on Saturday, Oct. 29 to face the Hawks at 1 p.m. The team returns home on Friday, Nov. 10 to face the Retrievers of UMBC after away games at Albany and New Hampshire.
