Volleyball Shocks UMBC With 3-1 Win

ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine volleyball team shocked conference rival UMBC by a final score of 3-1 (30-28, 28-30, 30-24, 30-26) on Saturday night. Maine improved to 3-19 on the season and 2-7 in America East, while UMBC fell to 19-9 and 4-5 in America East. Maine was led in kills by junior Lindsay Allman who tallied a co-match-high of 18. Allman recorded a double-double tallying a match-high 26 digs in addition to her 18 kills. Classmate Amy Lawson added 13 kills of her own. Freshman Megan Smith tallied her own double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs. Ashlee Wright totalled 20 digs for the Black Bears. Freshman Paige Tortorello recorded a match-high 62 assists for the Black Bears, coming just six shy of tying an all-time Maine record of 68 set by Cheryl Elliot in 2001. Armstrong also blocked four attacks for Maine. Five Black Bears were in double figures in kills for the match. Maine was seven shy of tying a all-time school record in kills with 72. The Black Bears recorded 79 kills in 2001 against Northeastern. UMBC was led in kills by Ashley Oscars who posted a co-match-high of 18. The Retrievers were led in assists by Stacey Carroll who totalled 45. Jaclyn Strader tallied a co-match-high 13 digs.
The first game was extremely close between the two teams. One team would go on a run and then lose the serve and the other team would have a run of their own. It was close all the way down to the wire and Maine squeeked out ahead 30-28. Maine had 18 kills to UMBC's 13. In the second game, it stayed close again. Neither team gave any room to the other. It once again took only a win by two but this time it was in UMBC's favor and they evened the match with a 30-28 score. Maine again led UMBC in kills 16-13. The third game saw Maine take a huge lead and never look back. They held the Retrievers at arm's length the whole game. Maine took a crucial game three with a final score of 30-24. Maine was unstoppable tallying 19 kills to UMBC's 11. The fourth game was definitely a nail-biter. UMBC took the lead early. Maine hung in there until later in the game they took the lead. The Black Bears ended up taking the game and the match with a final score of 30-26. Maine tallied 72 kills to UMBC's 50. The Black Bears had a season-high 105 digs compared to 89 for the Retrievers. Maine had a .217 attack percentage to UMBC's .134.
The Black Bears' next match will be on the road next week against conference rivals Stony Brook and Hartford onFriday and Sunday November 2 and 4. Maine's next and last home game of the season will be Friday November 9 against Albany.
