Oct. 29, 2006

Box Score

ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine volleyball team evened its America East record at 4-4 with a 3-1 victory at Hartford on Sunday. The Black Bears won by scores of 30-18, 27-30, 30-21 and 30-15. The Black Bears ran their overall record to 6-16 overall. The victory over the Hawks completed the two-match sweep for Maine this season. The Black Bears defeated Hartford, 3-0, back in Orono on Oct. 1.

Maine was led in kills by Jessica Wolfenden and Laura Goettsch as each registered 15 kills. It marked the second-straight match Goettsch led or tied for team-high honors in kills, as she also registered 17 in Friday's 3-1 win over Stony Brook at Memorial Gym in Orono. Lindsay Allman added 10 kills in the win. Senior setter and co-captain Shelly Seipp recorded 47 assists, while Amy Lawson tallied a team-best three blocks in the match.

The Black Bears led by as many as 12 in the first game in cruising to an easy 30-18 victory. Maine used a decisive 12-5 run midway through the match to go up 14-6 and never look back. The run was aided by a pair of kills from Goettsch.

Hartford jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in the second game and hung on for a 30-27 victory to even the match at a win apiece. However, Maine regrouped and answered with a nine-point victory in game three. The Black Bears snapped a 10-10 tie with a 6-1 run to go up and never look back. Goettsch added five kills in the game.

The Black Bears clinched the match with a convincing 30-15 victory in game four. Maine led by as many as 16 in the game before pulling away for the 15-point win.

Maine returns to action with a pair of road matches next weekend. The Black Bears will face Albany on Friday at 7 p.m., and then take on New Hampshire on Sunday at 1 p.m. Maine defeated the Wildcats earlier this season by a score of 3-0, while falling to Albany by a count of 3-1.
