Oct. 30, 2005

Box Score

DURHAM, N.H. - The University of Maine volleyball team pulled off its second sweep of New Hampshire this season with a 3-0 victory Sunday afternoon at Lundholm Gymnasium in Durham. The Black Bears, who improved to 8-11 overall and 5-3 in America East, won by scores of 30-17, 33-31 and 30-28. UNH fell to 6-18 overall and 3-6 in the league.

Senior co-captain Leah Guidinger (Prince Albert, Saskatchewan) led Maine with a match-high 15 kills, while classmate Shannan Fotter (Riverside, Calif.) added 13 and three blocks. Junior setter Shelly Seipp (Spokane, Wash.) had 42 assists, 11 digs and three service aces in the win.

The Black Bears never trailed in game one and jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead. Two service aces by Seipp in the first-three points of the game set the tone. Four kills by Fotter and three by Guidinger highlighted the game one win.

Maine, however, found itself trailing late in the second game by a count of 29-24. The Black Bears, though, responded and sparked by a Lindsay Allman (Fenton, Mo.) kill, reeled off five-straight points to knot it at 29. Sarah Rehn tied it at 31-31 for the Wildcats moments later with a kill. But Maine responded with consecutive kills from Guidinger and Amy Lawson (Coeur D'Alene, Idaho) to take game two, 33-31.

The Black Bears, again, found themselves trailing late in the third game. Down 24-22, Maine scored eight of the final 12 points to take the game and match. Two kills from Fotter and a service ace from Jody Connacher (Spokane, Wash.) highlighted the late run that sealed the win for Maine.

Maine will return to action Thursday when it plays host to UMBC in Memorial Gym. The match time has been moved up to 5:30 p.m.
