Volleyball Edges Out 3-2 Win Over UMBC

Oct. 31, 2008

Box Score

Orono, Maine - The University of Maine volleyball team squeaked out a five set conference win over visiting UMBC that went down to the wire. The Black Bears improve to 11-11 and 4-4 in America East, while UMBC falls to 15-10 and 4-4 in conference play. Maine was led by Lindsay Allman (St. Louis, Mo.) who had 16 kills and 14 digs.

The Black Bears were firing on all cylinders to start the match, taking the first two sets 25-21 and 25-23 due to an accurate and aggressive attack. The Retrievers responded by hitting .419 in the third set to win 14-25, avoiding the sweep and changing the tone of the match. UMBC's new swagger led them to a victory in set four as well, 20-25. With the teams deadlocked at two sets each, they exchanged blows in set five with powerful kills and a momentum changing block by Amy Lawson (Coeur D'Alene, Idaho). Tied at 14-14, both teams began struggling with serves, and the score took on a roller-coaster effect. Maine stopped the ride as Allman hammered down a kill that gave them the 17-16 lead, followed by a Retriever attack error that sealed the win.

The late block by Lawson was one of her three total blocks, she also added seven kills. Jessica Wolfenden (Ottawa, Ont.) served up 42 assists and dug 14 balls. Ashlee Wright (Muncie, Ind.) led the Black Bears with 19 digs. Brittany Kiehl (Virginia Beach, Va.) slammed home 10 kills and four digs.

With the win, Maine moves into a tie for third place in America East with only four games remaining. The Black Bears return to the court on Sunday when they welcome conference leader Albany to Orono for a 2 pm start.
