Volleyball Drops Match to Stony Brook 3-1

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The University of Maine volleyball team dropped a match conference rival Stony Brook by a final score of 1-3 (30-28, 20-30, 25-30, 27-30) on Friday night. Maine fell to 3-20 on the season and 2-8 in America East, while Stony Brook improved to 20-7 and 8-1 in America East. Maine was led in kills by junior Laura Goettsch who tallied 15. Classmate Lindsay Allman added 11 kills of her own. Allman also added a match-high 16 digs. Junior Ashlee Wright added 10 digs for the Black Bears. Freshman Paige Tortorello recorded 42 assists for the Black Bears. Junior Amy Lawson blocked five attacks for Maine. Stony Brook was led in kills by Jackie Ahlers who posted a match-high of 27. The Seawolves were led in assists by Kaitlyn Deutsch who totalled a match-high 51. Noelle Bay tallied 12 digs for Stony Brook. The first game was extremely close between the two teams. One team would go on a run and then lose the serve and the other team would have a run of their own. It was close all the way down to the wire and Maine squeeked out ahead 30-28. Maine had 14 kills to Stony Brook's 16. In the second game, Stony Brook started to pull away. They evened up the match at a game a piece by a score of 30-20. Stony Brook again led in kills 13-10. The third game saw Maine looking to stay in it. But the Seawolves took the game 30-25. The fourth game was definitely a nail-biter. Stony Brook took the lead early. Maine hung in there until later in the game they took the lead. The Black Bears ended up leaving the game and the match to the Seawolves by a fourth game score of 30-27. Maine tallied 57 kills to Stony Brook's 61. The Black Bears had 48 digs compared to 54 for the Seawolves.
The Black Bears' next match will be on the road on Sunday against conference rival Hartford on Sunday November 4. Maine's next and last home game of the season will be Friday, November 9 against Albany. --UM-- |
