Volleyball Falls to Albany in Three Sets

Orono, Maine - The University of Maine volleyball team dropped a late season conference contest in three sets to visiting Albany. With the loss the Black Bears fall to 11-12 overall and 4-5 in conference. The Great Danes improve to 17-8 overall and 9-0 in America East. Lindsay Allman (St. Louis, Mo.) led Maine with team-highs of eight kills and 16 digs. The Black Bears exchanged blows with Albany in the first set, but let it slip away for a 22-25 loss. With momentum on its side Albany reeled off a 15-25 win in set two, hitting .379 in the process. The Black Bears fought hard with their backs against the wall, but were unable to shift the balance of power as they fell 21-25 in the final set. Amanda Armstrong (Waukesha, Wisc.) aided the offense as she hit home seven kills and five digs. Ashlee Wright (Muncie, Ind.) dug 13 balls. Jessica Wolfenden (Ottawa, Ont.) added 24 assists, nine digs and four kills. Brittany Kiehl (Virginia Beach, Va.) supplied the defense as she collected five total blocks and four kills. The Great Danes were led by Valerie Sourbeer (Valley Center, Calif.) with 13 kills. With the loss Maine falls back to fourth place in America East, the final playoff spot, and hold a one-match lead over New Hampshire with three left to play. The Black Bears will travel to Hartford on Friday, November 7, for a 7 pm start.
