Nov. 3, 2006
ALBANY, N.Y. - The University of Maine volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision at Albany on Friday night. The Black Bears fell by scores of 16-30, 30-27, 16-30 and 27-30. Maine dipped to 6-17 overall and 4-5 in America East. The Great Danes improved to 15-9 and 8-2 in the league. Sophomore Laura Goettsch (Woodstock, Ontario), the league's reigning player of the week, led Maine with a career-high 19 kills, while classmate Jessica Wolfenden (Ottawa, Ontario) added 14. Lindsay Allman (Coeur D'Alene, Idaho) tallied 11 kills and 11 digs in the match. Shelly Seipp (Spokane, Wash.) recorded 51 assists, nine digs and a service ace. Albany took game one by jumping out to a 10-3 lead and never looking back. The second game looked to be a mirror image of the first one with Albany jumping out to a quick 4-1 lead. However, Maine countered and knotted the game at 9-9 on a kill by Goettsch. The game went back and forth before the Great Danes took a 27-24 advantage on a handling error by Jody Connacher (Spokane, Wash.) The Black Bears didn't fold and closed out the game on a 6-0 run to win 30-27. Goettsch capped the rally for the win by tallying a pair of kills. Maine kept the third game close early on and only trailed 9-7, but Albany went on a 21-9 surge the rest of the game to pull out the 30-16 victory. Both teams battled tough in the fourth game as Maine took a 26-24 advantage late with a kill from Wolfenden. However, Albany scored six of the final seven points in the game to earn the 30-27 victory and take the match three games to one.
The Black Bears return to action on Sunday when they travel to Durham, N.H., to face New Hampshire at 1 p.m.
