Volleyball Drops Tough 3-2 Decision at New Hampshire

Nov. 5, 2006

Box Score

DURHAM, N.H. - The University of Maine volleyball team dropped a tough 3-2 decision against New Hamsphire on Sunday afternoon in Durham, N.H. Maine fell to 6-18 overall and 4-6 in America East. UNH improved to 10-15 overall and evened its league record at 5-5. The Wildcats won by scores of 26-30, 30-28, 27-30, 30-26 and 15-13.

Sophomore Lindsay Allman (Fenton, Mo.) led Maine with 16 kills, while Amy Lawson (Coeur D'Alene, Idaho) added 15 and Laura Goettsch (Woodstock, Ontario) tallied 13. It marked the third-straight match Goettsch recorded double-digit kills. Senior setter and co-captain Shelly Seipp (Spokane, Wash.) posted 58 assists, three service aces and four blocks. Lawson totaled a match-high six blocks.

The Black Bears got off to a good start in the match by taking game one 30-26. Maine raced out to an early 5-2 lead on a pair of kills by Allman. UNH took a 19-13 late in game one, but Maine went on a 17-7 run the rest of the game to pull out the win. A kill by Lawson sealed the win for the Black Bears.

After dropping game two 30-28, Maine rallied for a 30-27 win in game three. The Black Bears overcame an early 11-6 deficit with an 8-3 run to go up 14-13 and never trail the rest of the way. Goettsch keyed the run with three kills. Maine led by as many as seven late in the game in earning the win.

However, UNH regrouped and won the last two games to complete the win in the match. The victory for UNH prevented Maine from sweeping the season series over the Wildcats. The Black Bears opened conference play back on Sept. 30 with a 3-0 victory over UNH at Memorial Gym in Orono.

Maine returns to action next weekend with a pair of home matches to close out the regular season. The Black Bears will play host to UMBC on Friday at 4 p.m., and then face Binghamton on Sunday at 1 p.m.
